Extreme Heat Warning for Oxfordshire: Stay Safe This Week
Residents are being urged to take extra care as the Met Office has issued severe heat warnings covering Oxfordshire this week.
An Amber Weather Warning is in place for Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 June, followed by a Red Weather Warning from Wednesday 24 to Thursday 25 June. Temperatures are expected to reach exceptionally high levels, creating risks to health, travel, and local services.
Who is most at risk?
While anyone can be affected by extreme heat, particular care should be taken for:
- Older people
- Babies and young children
- People with long-term health conditions
- Those who work outdoors
- Individuals living alone or in poorly ventilated homes
How to stay safe
To help reduce the risk of heat-related illness:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm where possible.
- Keep your home cool by closing curtains and blinds on sun-facing windows.
- Open windows overnight and during the cooler parts of the day.
- Check on elderly relatives, neighbours, and vulnerable members of the community.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest periods.
Heat exhaustion and dehydration can develop quickly during periods of prolonged hot weather. Anyone feeling unwell should move to a cool place, drink water, and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
Water Safety
Warmer weather often encourages people to cool off in rivers, lakes, and other open water. Please remember that water temperatures can remain dangerously cold and strong currents may be present. Take extra care around waterways and supervise children closely.
Travel and Service Updates
Residents are advised to check for any road disruptions, school updates, water supply issues, or power outages during the warning period, as extreme temperatures can affect infrastructure and services.
Looking After Each Other
Periods of extreme heat can be particularly challenging for vulnerable members of our community. Please take a few moments to check on neighbours, friends, and relatives who may need assistance.
